Elijah Star to take part in Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge

Last week you may have seen a boat named Lady Jayne and some of its crew being interviewed at Cutwell which is a small tributary of the River Avon that flows across Cutwell.

Famous for its triangular arch bridge, it is a Grade II listed former packhorse bridge and footbridge built c1622.

And it’s tranquil setting will be a far cry from the plans for this boat and crew to row across the Atlantic next year, raising funds and awareness for the children’s charity, Action Medical Research.

Action Medical Research is the charity fighting to help sick babies and children.

Action funds critical research which helps find answers that can lead to vaccinations, treatments and cures for childhood diseases and premature birth.

Next year in December 2021, team Elijah Star will depart La Gomera, Canary Islands to Nelsons dockyard English harbour Antigua and Barbuda, as part of the Talisker whiskey Atlantic challenge 3000 mile rowing race across the Atlantic.

They have set the target at 37 days which represents the brief life of baby Elijah, a premature but much loved son and brother who sadly lived after just 37 days.

You’ll be able to hear an interview with Dean and Phil from Elijah’s Star with Nicky Price on her BBC radio Gloucestershire show this Saturday.

Tetbury Goods Shed showing

ON Saturday, November 7, Tetbury Goods Shed are pleased to present Wilde without the Boy and the Ballad of Reading Gaol, Gareth Armstrong’s brilliant dramatisation of “De Profundis“, Oscar Wilde’s searing letter to his lover, written from his Reading Gaol cell.

Performed by Olivier Award nominee Gerard Logan and with music by Simon Slater, the piece is a window into the bruised soul of a literary genius.

Wilde’s poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol narrates the execution of Charles Thomas Wooldridge, convicted of murdering his wife.

Award-winning composer Simon Slater’s beautiful and original score provides a moving accompaniment to the performance.

Tickets: £12.50 plus booking fee. Doors open at 7pm. Licensed bar.

All tickets to be pre-booked via www.shed-arts.co.uk or by calling into Tetbury Visitor Information Centre.

Remembrance Service and poppy appeal

Here is the official information for this year’s Remembrance Service and poppy appeal from the hard working and tireless efforts of Jane and her team.

In last year’s Poppy Appeal, Tetbury and District raised £15,204.61 from all events and donations towards the cost of supporting former members of the forces and their families.

Sadly, with the onset of Covid-19 this year’s collection has been somewhat curtailed.

There will be no house to house collections.

Static collections in shops will be much reduced, but there will be some boxes and collecting tins in some outlets in the town.

It is hoped to run the usual street collections in Tesco, many thanks for permission to do this and also in Long Street and outside the post office.

There will be restrictions in place that will protect our volunteers and also the public.

The Remembrance Service in St Marys’ has been cancelled as has the March Past and Parade.

There will be a very simple wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial on Sunday, November 8, at 2.30pm, although again restrictions mean this is limited to invited representatives of the organisations involved.

But of course, later in the afternoon everyone is invited to make time to walk past the memorial, taking a few moments for their personal remembrance.

One idea is for everybody to put up poppy displays or pictures in their front window.

This would be a wonderful sign of respect and remembering, just as the image of a rainbow has become our shared symbol of “thank you” to the NHS and key workers.

In addition, the Royal British Legion has set up a link for donations online that will go towards the Gloucestershire appeal.

bit.ly/3ocEyby is the link for people to donate online to the Gloucestershire Poppy Appeal.

If anyone wishes for their donation to be attributed towards Tetbury’s amount this year, here are the details for BACS payments: The Royal British Legion, Sort Code 30-00-00, account 0025311, REF – MCB30.

Even in these challenging times we will never forget.

Thanks to delivery team

I HAD a lovely email from Tony Walsh who said: “Ann and I feel we should be thanking our newspaper delivery team who have kept many housebound folk abreast of the situation nationally and locally by prompt and regular deliveries of our newspapers.

"If there is any chance of mentioning in your column.”

Consider it done Tony and I’m sure many will agree with you. Thank you.
