POLICE closed the M4 after a single vehicle crash.

All emergency services were at the scene as they worked to free a man trapped in a car.

Drivers are being warned to use other routes as the junction 17 and 18 between Chippenham and Bath is currently closed in both directions.

Highways England tweeted: “Westbound between J17 Chippenham and J18 Bath is currently closed due to an accident. Please consider alternative routes and plan ahead for your journey.

“Due to the collision affecting the eastbound carriageway police currently have the eastbound carriageway blocked between J18 Bath and J17 Chippenham.”

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "We were called just after 11am today to a single vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway.

"One male driver was trapped in a car. Fire were at te scene to release him. Ambulance was also there."

A spokeswoman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire said: "We were called to the M4 westbound between J17 and J18 this morning at 11.25am for a single vehicle RTC in which the car had ended up on its roof.

"Three crews attended, two from Chippenham and one from Malmesbury, but were only needed to make the scene safe. The stop came at 11.54am. It's believed the male casualty was taken to hospital by ambulance."

The M4 has reopened but there are still delays to traffic flow.
