AN EIGHT-year-old go-karter from Wotton under Edge has won a prestigious racing title.

Jenson Chalk, a student at Blue Coat Primary, regularly competes in the national Bambino Kart Club Championships - the league of the UK’s best young racing drivers.

And on August 30 he became 2020 British Iame Bambino Champion.

The championship event was over five rounds, due to Covid, and featured 20 drivers from England, Ireland and also Spain.

In a dramatic twist of events, Jenson had a throttle cable snap during the first round, so had to fight hard to claw back a lead and ended winning the race in the last round.

He now gets to run the number one on his kart, and there will be a presentation evening when Covid restrictions allow, where he will be awarded with the championship trophy.

Jenson’s dad Mike said: "Jenson was very pleased and proud of himself, he is very focused so concentrates on what he needs to do and seems to keep working as hard as possible to win.

“He would go karting every weekend if he could," he added.

“He loves learning, racing and has made so many friends.

“The whole family are involved in supporting him, his sister Candy who goes to KLB School, and obviously me and his mum. Plus the family business, MCR Specialist Cars, sponsor Jenson.

“Jenson is also leading two more club championships events which have two rounds left in each. When these have finished he will move up a class to a bigger and quicker kart.”

Jenson started go-karting at the age of five.

His first experience of the sport was when he took the Bambino Training Modules at Daytona Motorsport in both Sandown and Milton Keynes.

Once he passed these he continued practicing at Daytona’s using their own karts.

He got his first Bambino Kart for Christmas 2017, which enabled him to go to various circuits for practice before he joined the Bambino Kart Club and entered the BKC National Championship.
