Swindon Advertiser:

More than 18 per cent of people cycle in the town according to government statistics and that number is only set to rise.

The Department of Transport measured cycling levels during the tightest period of lockdown, from March 16 to June 1, which showed that the activity had risen by 300 per cent.

There are currently works across the town to ensure the improved safety of cyclists on our roads.

The Fleming Way pelican crossing near the Magic Roundabout is being upgraded to a toucan crossing so that both pedestrians and cyclists can use it safely.

This comes amid the announcement by Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, that doctors will not be able to prescribe cycling to their patients in a bid to decrease levels of obesity - a move supported by the Swindon Labour group.

The Magic Roundabout had 23 accidents with the A4312 turning being an accident blackspot.

Swindon Advertiser:

Between the roundabout and Garrard Way on Drakes Way there were three ‘serious’ cycling accidents, two of which occurred in 2017 and one in 2018.

There was one fatal cycling accident in 2017 in Gorse Hill with a further 72 serious or slight accidents across the five year period.

Director of campaigns for the national road safety charity, Brake, Joshua Harris said:

“We urgently need more investment in dedicated cycling infrastructure and we need safer vehicle speeds, including 20mph limits in our towns and cities.”

Chapel Roundabout has had five crashes with a serious two-vehicle collision in January 2019.

In Walcot there were a substantial number of accidents, 64 between 2015 and 2019 with a majority happening on Whitbourne Avenue.
