TODAY we celebrate the nation's favourite dish - fish and chips.

Nothing quite beats a fish supper and we are pretty sure the Cotswolds has some of the best chippies in the world - but then we are biased.

So on this National Fish and Chip Day - which has taken place a little later than planned this year because of the coronavirus pandemic - we are celebrating the best in Cirencester according to our readers.

150 readers got in touch with us after we asked you where is your favourite chippy in the Cirencester area.

Friar Tuck came out as a clear winner after receiving the most votes from our readers, with 43.

Comments included: "They have vegan options and use a different fryer to cook them, friendly and very yummy!"

"Best fish and chips and the loveliest staff!"

Watermoor Chip Shop was voted the second best by The Standard readers, receiving 36 votes.

One reader said: "100% Watermoor, chips never greasy and fish batter light as a feather. Wouldn't go anywhere else."

Another reader said: "Watermoor, nice portions, best chippie, happy staff, always happy to please."

The Cotswold Chippy, a mobile traditional fish and chip van that visits local villages on a two weekly rota was voted third best, with 21 votes.

Also scoring highly were South Cerney Fish and Chips, Seafare Fish and Chips and Malt and Anchor.

There were a number of votes for chippies outside of Cirencester.

Stargazy Fish Bar in Tetbury, Fairford Fish Bar, The Tavern Inn, Kemble, The Chip Shed in Minchinhampton and Monica's Plaice Fish Bar in Lechlade all received votes.
