SPEEDS of more than 100mph are being clocked on the A4 between Beckhampton and Marlborough.

Campaigners blame the police for not speed trapping, and Wiltshire Council for not enforcing it - as all the cash goes straight to central government.

"Traffic fines are collected locally and go to central government so there is no incentive for the police to collect those fines," Wiltshire councillor Jane Davies told MP Danny Kruger.

"Maybe we could lobby to get a percentage of those fines back to spend locally. the whole of Wiltshire only issued something like 11,000 fines last year."

The campaingers claim Wiltshire is one of the best counties in which to drive your car fast because of it.

Danny Kruger has now leant his weight to the group, putting further pressure on both the council and the police.

He will push for a speed limit review as well as introducing road markings and bollards. He also supported the group's initiative for a cycleway along the route.

The campaign group, which includes West Overton and Fyfield, East Kennett, Preshute and Avebury parish councils fear nothing will be done until there is a serious accident.

"We have the Ridgeway where walkers cross at the top of this hill and it is incredibly dangerous stretch of the road," said Jill Turner, Lockeridge parish councillor. "We have been pushing for change for two years now."

The Bell nestles on the edge of the A4 at West Overton. Landlady Hannah McNaughton says speeds have noticeably picked up since lockdown.

"We keep out doors open, and can hear the speed at which they go past," she said. "The motorbikes scream along here. Does someone have to die before anything is done here?"

Cllr Davies added: "The Highways department need to give drivers the best opportunity to drive safely. We just want people to go at the speed limit."

Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police have yet to comment.
