The M4 will be shut eastbound tonight while contractors fix fire damage to the road.
Drivers have been stuck in lengthy queues all day after the motorway was partially shut between near Swindon a vehicle fire in the early hours of Monday morning damaged the surface of the road.
A spokeswoman for the Dorse and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 00:24am this morning about a car fire on the M4 between J16 and J15.
"Crews from Chippenham, Swindon and Westlea attended the incident and found a vehicle well alight on arrival.
"Two breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets and hydraulic cutting equipment to extinguish the fire – the stop came at 01:01am."
Highways England say the road will be fully closed eastbound between junctions 16 and 15 from 9pm tonight.
