I AM amazed by the proposal to increase parking charges from September 1. Do the councillors making this decision have any idea what is actually going on? In Cirencester the town centre is dead and most of the time the car parks are, at best, half full. We have a shop in the town and our takings over recent weeks have been dramatically down on the same period last year.

If you have a service that isn’t being fully used, then the answer must be to reduce charges not increase them. The council should be actively encouraging people back to the town centre but instead have chosen to go in the other direction.

The death of the high street is going to become a near certainty if this policy to hit the shopper continues.
