DETERMINED Phillip Hardwell is looking forward to a second chance at life after receiving a life-saving heart transplant in April.

The soldier from Yate underwent the operation after being diagnosed with a genetic condition which caused his heart to fail.

Giving an update on his progress, Phill told the Gazette he has ‘bundles more energy’ and is finally able to ‘look to the future’.

Doctors at the Royal Papworth Hospital, where Phill received his transplant, told the courageous dad-of-two, that he was a medical marvel. On more than one occasion, Phill’s life hung in the balance.

He left the hospital within two weeks of his operation and has continued to make incredible progress.

He said: “I feel amazing, I’m able to play with the kids and walk the dog which wouldn’t have been possible this time last year. I am glad to be back and making future memories with them.

“I wish to say a big thank you to all the staff who helped look after me during my stay in hospital.

“Also my family and friends who have supported me throughout, especially when I was unable to work, it is this support which has kept us going.

“And also to the military charity SSAFA, who helped support my family and I during uncertain times.”

He added: “I can never thank my donor and their family enough. The decision to be an organ donor is a fantastic and truly selfless act and I will be forever grateful.

Phill said he is now hoping to organise a charity sport event next year.
