‎Plans to relieve traffic congestion around Cirencester McDonald's have been announced.

The drive-through at the Cricklade Road restaurant re-opened yesterday morning at 11am.

Within hours, angry shoppers leaving Tesco and Aldi reported of hour long queues caused by fast food fans.

Council officers and the police have been working with the management at the restaurant to try and find a temporary solution.

Cotswold District Council leader Joe Harris said: " Thank you to everyone for your correspondence with respect to the queues at McDonald's.

"Council officers and the Police have been working with the management at the restaurant to try and find a solution.

"They have a plan today to use the Premier Inn car park for up to 100 vehicles, the police have provided signs to them to close their access if traffic builds up.

"Six McDonald’s are opening in Swindon today, many of the people yesterday were sent to Cirencester as Swindon restaurants only opening today, misinformation in local press.

"They seem to be on the case and wanting to get it right but we will obviously keep an eye on how things progress."

The Cirencester site is offering a limited menu and contactless payment is being encouraged.

Staff will be temperature checked before each shift and the number of workers on each site will be reduced to ensure social distancing.

Perspex screens have been installed at the Drive-Thru windows and staff have been given protective equipment.

A spokesman for McDonald's said: "With restaurant teams adjusting to new procedures to enable safe working and social distancing, things may take a little longer – and high demand is anticipated.

"McDonald’s and its franchisees are working closely with local authorities and the police, and may determine that it is necessary to close Drive Thru lanes if queues cause disruption at busier sites or put employees or customers at risk."
