After the end of the Second World War, ownership of motor vehicles became more widespread.

If you had car, or as many people had after the war, - a motorcycle; it was once possible to park outside many Cirencester shops to collect shopping or just to pop in for a coffee somewhere.

Motor vehicle engines in the 1950s and 60s were not very efficient and even quite small cars or motorbikes were by today’s standards - ‘petrol guzzlers’.

This meant that there was a greater need to refuel more frequently.
