More than 1,000 people have now died after testing posting for coronavirus in east London hospitals.

A total of 1,003 people have died at either Barts Health NHS Trust or neighbouring Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) since the start of the pandemic.

Barts Health NHS Trust, which manages Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone and four other hospitals, has seen the most deaths from the virus of any London trust.

It reported one new death, from May 16, today after test results were confirmed.

BHRUT, which manages King George Hospital in Ilford and Queen's Hospital in Romford, announced no new deaths today.

According to Public Health England, there were only 121 new coronavirus-related deaths in the UK yesterday.

An additional 1,625 people tested positive for the virus on the same day.

Since the start of the pandemic, almost 37,000 UK residents have died.

So far, more than 32,000 people have died in England since the start of the pandemic.
