It’s a rare thing to see a policeman walking the streets, although I did see one on horseback a little while back.
The bobby on the beat was once a familiar sight in Cirencester along with policemen on bikes up at Stratton and the surrounding villages.
It was quite common to see a constable at the top of the Market Place conducting traffic in the 1950s and 60s.
Crime hasn’t gone away but the miscreants these days are conveyed to Cheltenham instead of the Cirencester police cells.
Even the court has moved and Cirencester’s once modern courthouse built in the 1960s, has been sold for other purposes.
