POLICE chased, Tasered and arrested a dangerous driver after they spotted a speeding Mercedes on the M4.

Officers patrolled the stretch of road between junctions 17 and 16 at 9pm on Thursday when the Mercedes Sport undertook them at speed.

The cops flashed their blue lights, turned on their sirens and indicated to the vehicle to pull over but the driver sped off, exited the motorway at junction 16 and stopped on Spittleborough roundabout.

The police tried to get the driver out of his car but he reversed and drove off quickly, heading along Great Western Way.

During the second part of the pursuit, the driver hit a curb, drove towards Blagrove roundabout and then went back onto the M4 westbound.

After being stopped by three police cars, the driver got out and started threatening officers - so they used a Taser.

A man in his 40s from Cwmbran is in custody at Gablecross after being arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and dangerous driving.

Inspector Steve Love said: “This was a good piece of policing work by officers who were able to eventually bring this incident to a stop without any other road users being injured.

“The manner of driving and behaviour of the driver was unacceptable and could have caused serious injury or worse to other drivers.

“This case also shows that our officers are continuing to patrol roads across the county to ensure our communities are safe.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 101.
