A THIRD person in the Cotswolds has tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total in the district to three.

Public Health England (PHE) has confirmed there are now 11 cases of Covid-19 in Gloucestershire, with new cases in the Cotswolds, Stroud, Tewkesbury and Cheltenham areas.

To respect patient confidentiality, no further details about the individuals have been provided.

Sarah Scott, director of Public Health said: “I want to reassure everyone that, with our partners, we are doing everything we can to make sure the county is as prepared and resilient as possible.

“But it is important to be clear - we can’t do this alone, everyone needs to help where the can - check on your neighbours, especially those who are more vulnerable, to see if they need any support, reassurance or just a chat to help make sure they don’t become isolated.

“It’s a small thing but will have a big, positive impact.”

The first death of a coronavirus patient in the South West has also been announced.

The patient, a man in his 50s, had underlying health conditions and died on Saturday.

He has been treated at Bristol Royal Infirmary and lived in North Somerset.

Speaking on behalf of North Somerset Council, Cllr Don Davies, Leader of the Council said: “We are so sorry to hear this news and our heartfelt condolences are with the family and all who knew him as they come to terms with their loss.

“I understand that the family have requested privacy at this difficult time and I ask that everyone respects their wishes.

“I am sure the news will be met with sadness in the wider community and it is important that everyone remains calm and follows the latest national advice on the steps needed to reduce the spread of infection.

“The situation regarding coronavirus is changing rapidly and we must work together as a community to protect ourselves and those around us.

“We will all need to adapt to different day to day behaviours over the coming days and weeks and it is essential that we support each other as we do so.”
