Schools in England will be closed until further notice from Friday as the coronavirus pandemic grips the country, education secretary Gavin Williamson has announced.

Prime minister Boris Johnson added summer A-level and GCSE exams would not be going ahead in May and June as planned.

Mr Williamson said children of key workers and the most vulnerable will still be able to attend school while their fellow pupils are staying away.

He told MPs: “I want to provide parents, students and staff with the certainty they need.

“After schools shut their gates on Friday afternoon they will remain closed until further notice.

“This will be for all children except to those of key workers and where children who are most vulnerable.”
