A Cirencester man has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a supermarket.

Matthew Brain, 20, of Querns Lane, Cirencester, pleaded guilty to two offences when he appeared before Cheltenham Magistrates Court on March 3.

Magistrates heard how on August 5 last year, Brain was in Tesco Express, on Manchester Court, Moreton-in-Marsh, when he was in possession of a dumbbell bar without a reasonable excuse.

The court heard how Brain also used abusive or insulting words or behaviour in the town.

He was sentenced to complete 60 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months and participate in an accredited programme for 30 days.

Brain was also ordered to pay costs of £130.
