A prolific shoplifter who stole from supermarkets in Cirencester on eight occasions in just one month has been spared jail.

Benjamin Savory nicked items totalling £393.75 between November and December last year.

He stole from Tesco Extra, in Cricklade Road, on four occasions and also targeted Co-op service station, in Burford Road, on four occasions.

Magistrates heard how Savory stole a Sony speaker, Lego and children's toys, DVD's and meat.

Admitting the offences at Cheltenham Magistrates Court, Savory, 26, of Melmore Gardens, Cirencester, received a 16 week prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Savory was ordered to pay £125 in compensation.
