More than £1,000 was raised for the Salvation Army during the Christmas period.

The Cirencester Corps of the Salvation Army were busy playing carols across the district in Tetbury, Fairford, Kempsford, Bibury, Barnsley and the Duke of Gloucester Barracks at South Cerney.

They also performed in Cirencester town centre, with visits to a number of houses in the town.

£635.35 was raised by generous residents in Tetbury, whilst £1,215.07 was raised by generous shoppers and residents in Cirencester town centre.

Donations from the other events also raised significant sums.

The charity's Christmas appeal for toys and food to be made up into parcels for those in need was also very well supported.

Cirencester foodbank were said to have helped massively with the food parcels.

The provision of toys was generously supported by a number of individuals, local churches and particularly a number of local schools.

A number of children from the schools helped with the packing of the parcels along with friends and members of the Corps.

In total 195 food parcels and over 330 toy parcels were distributed in the district.

A spokesperson for The Cirencester Corps of the Salvation Army said: "It seems that year on year the number of parcels increases, reminding us all that beneath Cirencester’s veneer of affluence there are needs to be met and already thoughts turn to the coming year, not only for Christmas but as and when the need arises.

"However thank you all for your generous support helping to bring happiness to many this Christmas."
