The A419 has been closed in both directions this evening following multiple crashes.

Police say they have received numerous calls reporting crashes between  the Spine Road and Castle Eaton junctions.

A spokesman for Royal Wootton Bassett & Cricklade Police said: "Please avoid the area while we deal with those involved, there maybe road closures or diversions in place shortly once all emergency services arrive at scene.

"Even with all those signs, cones and a marked police car, people are still stopping to ask if they can use the road!

"The Cirencester road opposite this closure runs parallel to the A419 and will bypass the RTC’s."

A spokesman for Gloucestershire police said: "The A419 southbound carriageway from Cirencester to Spine Road is closed at the moment due to excessive surface water.

"We've had a report of two vehicles aquaplaning and losing control, resulting in one car facing the wrong direction.

"Please be cautious and take care while driving in these poor weather conditions."

Traffic is being diverted via the B4696 and B4040. Follow the solid circle diversion symbol.

The closure was lifted shortly after 2am.
