GLOUCESTERSHIRE police are urging people to stay safe by making sensible decisions and refraining from drink driving this New Year's Eve.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire police said: "It's the last night of the year, and a chance to get together with family and friends to say goodbye to 2019 and welcome 2020.

"But make sure that 2019 is all you say goodbye to by keeping yourself and others safe on the roads this New Year's Eve."

Chief Inspector Al Barby, who leads the Specialist Operations Team, said: "A wee tipple may be the traditional accompaniment to Auld Lang Syne, but if you're planning to drive after the celebrations it is not a good idea.

“When it comes to drinking and driving none for the road is the only safe option.

"This year Gloucestershire Constabulary has more officers than ever stopping drivers and testing them for drink and drugs as part of our Christmas campaign.

"This is part of our commitment to the safe and social driving priority of the police and crime plan, and our officers have been out doing road checks in all parts of the county since the beginning of the month.

"So don't take the risk - getting caught drink or drug driving could see you saying goodbye to your car, your cash, your freedom and even your life.

"Our officers are looking forward to 2020 too - they do not want to spend New Year's Day telling heartbroken families that their loved one has died because of 'one for the road'.

"Plan ahead. How are you going to get home after the trip to the pub? Book taxis well in advance, or agree with friends that someone will be a designated, sober driver.

"I would like to thank all our officers, members of the Special Constabulary, and partner agencies for their commitment to the campaign this year and wish them and everyone in Gloucestershire a very happy New Year."
