THE founder and leader of a sports club for people with disabilities in Yate has won the South West Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Award after her fantastic work in running the group.

Georgina Moore founded the GEM Boccia Club at Yate Leisure Centre in 2017 as she wanted to be part of a sports club despite her physical disabilities.

“I’m extremely honoured to have won the South West Unsung Hero Sports Personality of the Year Award,” Georgina said.

“I can’t express how much it means to me to have achieved something so special that has made all my loved ones so proud of me.”

Georgina has a severe physical disability and set up GEM Boccia Club from scratch just over two years ago.

Boccia is similar to bowls but you play sitting down and you can use any part of your body to propel the ball.

Out of the whole of the UK Georgina and around 12 others from different regions will now attend the Sports Personality of the Year Awards on December 15 where she could potentially win the award nationally.

“I can only imagine that there will be many famous sport stars in close proximity at the awards ceremony,” she said.

“I’m a massive tennis fan and I really want to meet Andy Murray.

“I admire his drive and determination despite being faced with many injuries throughout his career. He fights through the pain and always gives it 100%.

“I’m so grateful to my family for raising me with great morals, which has helped mould me into who I am today.

“I’m thankful to my carers for giving me my freedom, especially my main carer Tom, who qualified as a Boccia coach so I could run the club.

“He is imperative to the club’s success and has enriched my life so much. Thank you to Access Sport for their continued support and financial contributions when needed. Appreciation to Lauren Kianchehr from Boccia England for her constant support and mentoring. Massive thank you to BBC Points West for selecting me as the regional winner and for so much support. Finally, thank you to every single club member who are so loyal and committed. Every one of them is valued and make the club what it is today.”
