Cirencester-based radio station Corinium Radio is celebrating an exciting scoop — it will be the first to interview Father Christmas when he lands in Cirencester for this year’s Advent Festival.

The voluntary-run organisation is delighted to have been chosen to provide coverage of the annual festival — set to culminate in the switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights by Countryfile presenter Ellie Harrison — in partnership with Cirencester Town Council and The Barn Theatre.

From 1pm to 7.30pm, a number of Corinium Radio presenters will cover the day on camera from a pop-up studio, with the footage to be transmitted live into the heart of the event — Cirencester’s Market Place — via a big screen.

This coverage, also available live via Corinium Radio’s Facebook page, will feature interviews with local people who make a difference to Cirencester, as well as Father Christmas.

There will additionally be a festival-themed programme from 1pm to 7.30pm on the Corinium Radio airwaves.

This can be listened to live via http://www.coriniumradio.co.uk/.

Commenting on the station’s partnership with The Barn Theatre and Cirencester Town Council, station chair Carole Boydell said: “It’s always a great privilege for Corinium Radio to bring people together to showcase their creativity and support for the town and we are especially excited to be doing this as part of the 2019 Cirencester Advent Festival & Light Switch On.”

Having first gone live in 2006 on a two-day license, Corinium Radio now broadcasts online 24/7 from a permanent studio in the centre of Cirencester.

The station’s membership is made up of a wide range of ages, interests and experiences, with programmes spanning everything from pop music to creative writing.

The organisation recently launched a young people’s project entitled Speak Up, which aims to give people under 30 the training and skills to report on news stories from the local area.

The station is always looking for new volunteers, whether they have previous radio experience or not. All ages, locations and skills are welcome.
