She has had no interest in her at all since she came to SNDogs.

Now the charity is hoping to find a forever home for their rescued Spanish Galgo named Princess Opal.

The five year old ex-hunting hound was rescued from Spain eight weeks ago, after suffering abuse.

“Who knows what horrors this poor girl has been through,” said trustee and volunteer Clare Fantini-Stephens.

The hound has large narrow scars on the back of her head, and it is suspected these are from an attempt to hang her when she was no longer seen as a useful hunting dog.

“This often happens in Spain," said Claire. “She is a very scared little girl who is desperate for some love."

Opal is currently staying in one of the charity’s foster homes, and behaves well in the house and when left on her own. Opal is such a sweetie. Her most favourite thing is a sofa to lie on for the day,” said Clare.

The pooch has bonded with another dog living in her foster home, so SNDogs recommends she gets adopted into a home that already has another dog for her to befriend.

“We think she’ll do best in a house with a confident dog that can teach and show her how to live her best life as she is very frightened and nervous.

“She will need confident, patient owners that will give her lots of love and help her trust the world again,” Clare added.

Opal has a strong prey drive from her days as a hunting dog so will not be suitable for rehoming in a house where there are other small pet animals.

“In the two weeks since her foster family have had her, so far they can see she’s slowly opening up and is now greeting them at the door with a waggy tail,” added Clare.

SNDogs runs a foster organisation, where needy dogs are looked after in a network of volunteer homes. It asks for a £200 donation for each dog when adopted, to cover the cost of previous care, including neutering, vaccination, dental work and flea treatment.
