THIS eye-catching design for a multi-storey car park in Cirencester has been chosen as the best option by the town’s residents.

More than 1,200 people have voted for their favourite designs for a new multi-storey on the site of the Waterloo car park.

Last month, residents and businesses in the town were invited to give their views on the three designs for the structure – the ‘Wooden Weave’, ‘Hare and Mosaic’ and ‘Aluminium on Stone’.

Voting took place online and at exhibitions held at The Fleece in Market Place and the Cotswold District Council offices.

People were asked to rank the designs in order of preference, using a points system where three were awarded to their first choice, two for second and one for third – and the Wooden Weave was most popular.

The Wooden Weave received 2,297 points, with 1,852 awarded to the Aluminium on Stone design and 1,794 to the Hare and Mosaic.

Cotswold District Council, which hosted the exhibition, said that the overwhelming majority of people who voted favoured a ‘decked’ (multi-storey) car park in the town, with 83 per cent supporting the idea.

However, despite the public choosing their favourite during this consultation, that doesn’t mean the town will end up with the Wooden Weave design.

CDC said the purpose of the consultation was to eliminate one of the designs from the process, so that the other two can be taken forward and one then chosen by the council – however, in a twist, all three creations remain in contention.

The council’s group Manager of the commissioning, leadership and management team, Claire Locke said: “We would first like to say a big thank you to all the people who took the time to give us their views on the proposed designs.

“We are delighted by the response and very pleased that more than four out of every five voters were in favour of a decked car park in Cirencester.

“Our aim in seeking public opinion was to help us to eliminate one of the designs to bring the shortlist down to two.

“However, as there was considerable support for each one, our project team will continue to work closely with our specialist consultants and get more technical detail from the architects.

“This will include refined costs, ease of build and maintenance, ensuring privacy of nearby residents, and in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy, the fire resistance of proposed materials.

“There were many excellent points raised and comments made by the public and these will be included in our next discussions with the architects.

“This may well lead to modified designs and once we have more in-depth detail on the technical elements we will be in a better position to select the final two from which we will appoint a winner, hopefully in September.”
