Farmers' Market news with Gerb Gerbrands.

We are delighted to announce that Newark Farm, organic vegetables and rare breed chicken’s eggs, will be returning to the market this week after their mid-summer lay off.

Although they have a full range of seasonal vegetables, it is their broad range of potatoes that is their speciality, with a wide variety available throughout the year - cara, pink fir apple, Desiree, Charlotte, Nicola, ratte and Belle De Fontenay are just a few of the varieties you’ll find at the stall, though not all this week!

We often overlook the humble potato when discussing ‘cuisine’ but over the years I have discovered that each variety has its own unique flavour and texture.

Shoe-horning Newark back into the organic veg aisle will mean that the lower end of Union Street will become busier with stalls again, with the likes of Skylos dog foods, Hempen, Baked By Beth, Eccentric Gin and The Welsh Cake Lady all likely to be joining the regulars of Salt Bakehouse and Tuga Pastries down there.

This should also be the last week of the scaffolding in Union Street, which has meant Pippin Doughnuts and Forest Mushrooms have been moved around the market to wherever there is space. We hope you are managing to find them!

Elsewhere we welcome back some lovely makers for their occasional stalls, Dizzibirds with flower brooches, Tania Harvey Artisan Silver, Penny Campbell pottery, Escento Soaps and Taena Pottery and also Bow in the Cloud vineyard.
