The organiser of an event that has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity has been nominated for a Pride of the Cotswolds award.

Sharon Scrivens, who runs Cirencester Relay for Life, has been nominated in the Charity Fundraiser category.

Cirencester’s version of the 24-hour event has raised £200,000 for Cancer Research UK in its first two years, and will return for a third time tomorrow.

Sharon has been fundraising for Relay for Life since 2001. She became a team captain at the Portsmouth event after her father, Alan Carpenter, died from leukaemia the year before.

She then set up the Cirencester event after losing her son, Ashley, to melanoma in 2014.

“I’m very very passionate about Cancer Research UK”, said Sharon.

“It’s a lovely event. We honour those that we have lost and we support those that are fighting it now.”

The person who nominated Sharon had ‘worked tirelessly in the community to raise funds for Cancer Research’.

Sharon said it was ‘amazing’ to be nominated.

“It’s not just me. We have got a committee and a team of volunteers who work really really hard,” she added.

This year’s Relay for Life is taking place at South Cerney Airfield and starts at midday on Saturday.
