It is set to be the hottest day of the year in the UK today writes Leah Welch.

Temperatures could reach record heights in some parts of the country.

Here are six tips to keep cool in the heat.

1) Keep the curtains and blinds closed during the middle of the day to keep the heat out of your home.

2) Stay in the shade or indoors between 11am and 3pm and take care not to get sunburnt: once you are burnt you skin will emit huge amounts of heat making it really difficult to feel cool and comfortable.

3) Wear lightweight, natural fabrics. Synthetic fabrics like acrylic and nylon don’t let your skin breathe properly and you’ll overheat much more quickly.

4) Run cold water over your wrists where your veins are close to the surface of your skin.

5) Keep your moisturiser and after-sun in the fridge.

6) Take cool or cold baths or showers to refresh and cool down quickly.
