AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of a Stroud teenager who drowned in a swimming pool in Vietnam while on a backpacking trip with friends.

Matthew Cook, 19, of Kites Nest Lane, Stroud was staying in the Hostel Ninhvana in the coastal resort of Nha Trang in Vietnam when he died on May 22.

He had been in a swimming pool with a group of friends, Gloucestershire coroner Katie Skerrett was told.

His friends left him with some other people who were staying at the hostel and at around 3 am that morning he was seen to be 'unresponsive.'

The alarm was raised but he was pronounced dead at 4am.

A post mortem was conducted on June 11, where a CT scan confirmed a medical cause of death as head injury and drowning.

The coroner adjourned the inquest until November 14 for a full hearing.
