A WAR veteran from Cirencester has slammed the town council for its ‘disrespectful market’ on the anniversary of D-Day.
The veteran, who did not want to be named, was walking through the market on Saturday when he saw the war memorial in the Market Place blocked by a stall.
He said: “There is plenty of room in the Market Place for all stalls without blocking the war memorial.
“It is down right disrespectful.”
Cirencester Town Council, which runs the market every second and fourth Saturday of the month, has defended the location of the stalls.
A spokesman for the council said: “We are aware of the concern and whilst we obviously do all we can to ensure that during market days the memorial is both visible and accessible, there may be occasions when access and views to the memorial are restricted.
“We hope that the public would agree that the new space, in front of the memorial, has significantly improved the opportunity for the whole community to commemorate various remembrance occasions, none more so than the Human Poppy in 2018.”
