A schoolgirl was taken to hospital following a hit and run in Cirencester.

The 12-year-old girl was using a pedestrian crossing on London Road at 1.30pm on Saturday when a motorist went through a red light and hit her causing injuries to her leg and foot.

The driver of the black Vauxhall Astra who failed to stop and carried on in the direction of Burford Road services was described as being a white man who was wearing glasses.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses to a hit and run incident in which a twelve-year-old girl was hospitalised.

"At approximately 1.30pm on Saturday, a group of teenage girls were using the pedestrian crossing on London Road in Cirencester.

"Whilst the girl was crossing the road, a black Vauxhall Astra went through a red light and then struck the girl.

"This incident happened in a busy area and we are appealing for anyone with information to come forward."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident number 219 on June 8.
