A FIRE has broken out in a flat in Cirencester.

Four crews are currently on the scene in Swinford Close, off Siddington Road.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "A fire has broken out in a private residence.

"Four appliances are on site, and the crews are using an aerial platform.

Pictures on social media show the roof of an end of terrace newly built property ablaze. 

Lisa McKechnie called the emergency services.

She said: "I called the fire brigade as I saw smoke coming from an open upstairs windows.

"I banged the doors and think they were all empty, thank goodness, it went up so quickly.

"The fire brigade where there in five minutes and went inside, they are such heroes."

Eyewitness Anna Underwood said: "I saw it spread so quickly from a window on the top floor right across the roof. It was just awful.

"I hope everyone is okay. Praise to the firefighters, they responded and dealt with it very quickly." 

Hayley Bevans was in the area at the time the fire started.

She said: "The fire brigade's have done an amazing job as the fire spread so quickly from the time we phoned them.

"They sent crews from Cirencester and Cricklade asap followed by Cheltenham ones to use hydraulics.

"The council have been out and we are waiting for scaffolding to secure the building."

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: "We were called to assist with road closures following a report of a fire on Spire View in Cirencester at around 1.10pm.

"We are working with GFRS to establish the cause of the fire and anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident 187 of 7 June."
