For the first time in its 24 year history, the annual North Cotswolds Rotary charity golf day has been won outright by a woman.

In a closely fought contest, the individual winner of the Honess Cup was Gill Ashton, Colin Gatenby was narrowly beaten into second place, and Else Ogden was hot on his heels in third.

The competition was played over 18 holes with a shot gun start.

Winners of the team prize were Gill Ashton, Else Ogden, Nicole Arkell and Charles Arkell.

Colin Gatenby won the Clifford and Webb Cup for the best Rotarian score.

Nearest the pin 6th hole and 12th holes were one by Nick Southwell and Nick Haywood respectively and longest drive went to Charlie Davies.

Although there was little in the way of sun, the rain stayed away for the most part.

Over 40 golfers enjoyed raising funds in a sporting and convivial competition at Naunton Downs Golf Club.

This event has attracted community spirited golfers and sponsors since 1996 and has raised in excess of £90,000 for charity in its 24 year history.

Entrants enjoyed hospitality both in the club house and out on the course from principal sponsors Brio Retirement Living.

During a delicious dinner, prepared by Terri Collett, a charity auction was held.

Lots were swelled by the hole-in-one prize which nobody managed to win this year.

So, one lucky bidder won dinner, bed and breakfast at the Lords of the Manor Hotel; a prize worth £300.

The 4 charities that benefitted from money raised by the Golf Day were Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, the NSPCC, Midlands Air Ambulance and Canine Partners.

Peter Boxall, organiser of the event said: “I’d particularly like to thank Ian Wilson, owner of Naunton Downs, our principal sponsor Brio Retirement Living, who not only made a generous donation but also were on hand to make the day go with a swing – including a Pimms tent on the course!

"I’ve organised a number of these events and we’re so grateful to everyone who sponsors or takes part in this charity fundraiser.

"I’m already thinking about the 25th Silver Anniversary event next year.”
