Long-awaited plans to build a new Forest Green Rovers football stadium could be approved next week.

Planning officers at Stroud District Council said the new 5,000-seat stadium will allow the League Two club to “enter a new era”.

The ground, made almost entirely out of wood, was designed by world renowned achitects Zaha Hadid and would be built near the A419 the junction 13 of the M5.

The idea is for the stadium and its surroundings to reflect the sustainable ethos of the world’s greenest football club, run by Ecotricity chief Dale Vince.

The proposals submitted also show 1,700 spaces for cars, coaches and cycles, as well as two full-sized grass pitches and a goal practice area.

Permission to improve the A419 from from J13 of the M5 to Chipmans Platt roundabout is also being proposed.

This will include traffic lights to the site, a pedestrian and cycle crossing, and a combined footway/cycleway which will link to national cycle route 45 at Grove Lane.

The new stadium would be sited in parkland where some five hundred trees and 1.8km of new hedgerows would be planted.

There will also be a club shop, food and beverage facilities and a health and fitness suite.

A council report to be presented to the authority’s development control committee next week said: “The proposed development will allow the club to enter a new era, with a purpose built stadium, with training facilities centrally located and presenting a ‘modern image’, encouraging staff and players alike to aim high.

“The proposal stadium will elevate the football ambitions to another level, increase the support base and has the potential to make FGR financially viable going forward.

“The new stadium has the potential to be a sustainable home for FGR into the future, allowing them to compete at a higher level and make progress on the pitch.

“This has the potential to some degree to encourage greater participation including the women’s and youth sections of the club.

Early plans to build a green tech business hub were dropped last year.

Stroud District Council officers have recommended the stadium is approved on June 12, from 6pm.
