With one week to go until polling day, local election candidates have shared their visions for Thornbury.

Six candidates, three Lib Dems and three Conservatives, are standing in the new Thornbury ward in the hope of being elected to South Gloucestershire Council.

Shirley Holloway and Maggie Tyrrell, both currently representing Thornbury South and Alveston, are seeking re-election.

Cllr Holloway said: "I first became a town and district Councillor in 1991 and have worked on several committees. My particular involvement with South Gloucester Council has been as a member of the Health Scrutiny Committee where I have continually argued for better facilities for Thornbury. Elsewhere I have also stressed the need for infrastructure to cope with the vast numbers of new houses."

Cllr Tyrrell said: “The town is already under pressure from so many new developments, so I’ll continue the fight for better facilities, including a new health centre, youth services and better funding for schools, to support the growth we’ve already got.

Gazette Series:

Jayne Stansfield, a town councillor along with the other Lib Dem candidates, said: “I believe we need more social and affordable housing, along with improved infrastructure to support the town’s growth. I will bring my education expertise to bear to ensure that South Gloucestershire provides the best possible education services with the limited funding available."

Gazette Series:

Simon Begbey, Stephen Chubb and Sue Gillett are all standing for the Conservatives.

Simon said: “My key aims are to improve funding for local schools, ensure that any development has the associated infrastructure to go with it and to keep parking free so that the town centre stays alive. I know how to make finances work in business and want to make sure that finances work for the local community.”

Gazette Series:

Steve said: “I have a strong association with Thornbury and as a result of this I feel committed to maintaining and hopefully improving its facilities and services for the benefit of the people of Thornbury and the surrounding areas. If the voters were to support me in this to become a Councillor I would be in a strong position to achieve this and help deliver our positive plan.”

Gazette Series:

Sue said: “As a resident in Thornbury for over 40 years, I welcome this opportunity to influence for the good of the whole community, both new and established, the inevitable changes ahead and ensure that the vital infrastructure needs for the town and surrounding areas are met speedily.”
