A Malmesbury man and his love of vacuum cleaners will feature in a television programme on antiques and collectibles next week.

Engineer Jack Copp, 32, is making a guest appearance in a new vintage-themed show, Curiosity, hosted by Wiltshire's TV antiques expert Paul Martin.

Mr Copp said: “I mostly collect vacuum cleaners although my collection also includes vintage toasters, washing machines, hair dryers, fans, food mixers, valve radios and ciné cameras.

"I’ve been collecting all my life. As a very small child I was obsessed with appliances and gadgets, and as soon as I was old enough I was dismantling anything I could get my hands on.

"Sometimes when friends or family bought a new vacuum, I’d be gifted the old one.

"I’ve also had a lot of luck with car boot sales and online auctions.

"Before long I had a collection, and over the years the machines have multiplied from the tens into the hundreds.”

He will be appearing in episode 12 of Curiosity next Thursday on April 16, on BBC 1 at 2.15pm.

The vacuum cleaner enthusiast said: “I set the challenge of putting vacuum cleaners from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s in chronological order, using clues like the design and styling to work out their ages.”

The TV show Curiosity has a competitive format which puts contestants’ knowledge of antiques and collectables to the test with teams of two fighting it out.

The initial idea for the new show was dreamed up by Wiltshire-based Paul Martin and his wife Charlotte.

Paul said: “This show is the culmination of an idea Charlotte and I came up with at home at our kitchen table.

"To see it come to life and to work alongside contestants with a role love of social history and all things vintage has been a real privilege.”

The programme is made by Hungry Gap of Bristol.
