WERE you the victim of an April Fool?

There is nothing better than hoaxing someone as long as it is harmless and funny.

The BBC back in the mists of time played a memorable joke on the nation.

Richard Dimbleby, the voice of authority and wisdom spoke about the cultivation of spaghetti, telling us, the aid of some pretty good pictures that it grew on trees.

Well done Richard, you scored quite a few hits there.

Our own Points West secured another triumph.

It was at the height of space travel.

Man had landed and walked on the moon.

Samples of moon rock had been brought back to earth for investigation.

All were agog!

Points West was then male dominated.

It was the days of Mark Puckle, Chris Denham and John Norman.

They introduced a sudden piece of news.

The moon rock had been analysed and the results were quite clear.

It was an exact match for rock taken from Chipping Sodbury Common.

The timing was just right so everyone was waiting for news of the moon substance and well done BBC for another harmless and funny April Fool.

I was not caught, but was by this one from BBC Radio Gloucestershire and I think it was the Mark Cummings’ Breakfast Show.

The high speed rail link from Birmingham to the Midlands had just been announced.

I switched the radio on hearing there was to be an extension from Birmingham South to Swindon (or was it Bristol?) to reach the economically depressed South West.

The extension line would reach the Cotswolds near Chipping Camden and pass through or near many Cotswold beauty spots.

I believed it totally and when Bisley was mentioned I switched off in anger.

Protests were being planned When Mrs Light, as calm as ever, asked me if I knew what day it was.

Yes – a truly funny and harmless hoax.

What were the best this year?
