The Standard readers have had their say on whether or not changes should be made to Cirencester town centre.

Last week we ran a poll asking our readers "should the one way system on Castle Street in Cirencester be reversed permanently?"

83 percent of readers who took part in our poll voted yes, the one way system on Castle Street in Cirencester should be reversed permanently.

The poll follows calls from some residents and businesses to make the change permanent after a road closure was put in place for roadworks.

The one way system on Castle Street was temporarily reversed due to the closure of Old Tetbury Road between March 11 to March 15.

This meant traffic in the town centre could turn right into Castle Street, a previously permanent feature before the revamp of the Market Place in 2016.

Residents described the temporary change as 'more people friendly, safer and a vast improvement to the current system'.

The results of the poll was shared with Gloucestershire County Council, who said there are currently no plans for a permanent change.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council said, “We appreciate the positive comments from residents, and we are pleased our highways repairs have not caused too much disruption.

"As the highways authority we are working closely with our partners to deliver their plans to improve Cirencester town centre.

"Any changes to the one way system would need to be made in partnership with Cirencester Town Council, Cotswold District Council and the police.

"There are currently no plans to consider making this a permanent change.”

A spokesperson for Cirencester town council said: "Whilst this is a highways matter, the town council is currently working in partnership with Cotswold District Council in preparing a town centre masterplan and through the Cirencester futures initiative has begun engagement with the public on the current needs of the town centre and in shaping future development and infrastructure."
