A major commuter road for Yate and Chipping Sodbury could be about to change.

A consultation has been set up by South Gloucestershire Council to evaluate the safety of cyclists that use the Kennedy Way dual carriageway.

The road runs from Yate Town Centre right through to the roundabout for Old Sodbury, acting as a bypass for Chipping Sodbury.

It is thought that it is not a desirable route for cyclists however, particularly eastbound.

The consultation on the council website said: “The road remains intimidating to cyclists and creates severance to north south journeys.

“The purpose of the scheme is to: formalise separation between cyclists and motor vehicles, make the road more attractive to cyclists, improve the visibility of cycle lanes and heighten drivers awareness of cyclists presence and help address community severance and improve access to Chipping Sodbury School.”

The proposed scheme would include the installation of mandatory cycle lanes on the road.

There would also be an extension to the westbound cycle lanes for residents.

On the website, the proposal also states that they could look to reallocate dual lane road space on the two lane carriageway eastbound.

The two lanes would would become single lane with 1.5m minimum cycle lane alongside, this would then be separated by a hatched area buffer of 1m.

The consultation of the scheme runs until March 24, with residents able to have their say over the proposals on the council website.

The new scheme comes just after South Gloucestershire Council announced their latest budget for 2019, including £35 million of investment in to roads.

The Mayor of Yate John Ford is a keen cyclist and he praised the proposals, saying: “I think it is a really good idea to install the new cycle lanes there.

“To make the lane mandatory as well will prevent cars from parking there which will help to prevent a number of possible incidents involving bikes.

“The more cycle lanes we have, the more people will get on their bikes and that is a good thing.”

“What would be great is if it can somehow be connect to the cycle track near Westerleigh so cyclists can get to Bristol or Bath very easily.”
