A community shop in Oldbury is going from strength to strength.

Oldbury on Severn Community Shop celebrated its fifth birthday in February and a new kitchen area was opened to mark the occasion.

The Church Road shop is entirely run by volunteers with any profits made going to benefit the wider community.

Local produce such as fresh bread, meat and homemade cakes are available.

There is also a cafe area with outdoor seating.

Chris Awde, vice chairman of the Oldbury Community Shop Committee, said: "It’s a very friendly place and a great place to make new friends and importantly give a little bit back to the community and good causes."

The shop has around 30 volunteers from Patchway, Thornbury and Sharpness as well as Oldbury, but is always on the look out for more.

"We have recently been pleased to welcome a number of new volunteers to the shop which is really encouraging and great news for the future," said Chris.

"The volunteer slots are generally only two hours and there is absolutely no pressure in terms of commitment in that the volunteer picks when they want to work and this can be two hours a week or two hours a month.

"Basically the volunteer makes the decision when he or she wants to work.

"The shop's success has again allowed us to make a number of donations to local good causes and local charities having received an increased number of applications this year.

"We are only able to do this through the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and they should all be very proud of what we have achieved together."

Recent donations made by the shop include £250 to toddler group Oldbury Busy Bees to cover the cost of buying a children’s kitchen for their play area and £500 to the Friends of Oldbury School to help fund an outside all weather running area.

Donations have also been made to organisations in the wider area including Thornbury Food Bank, Great Western Air Ambulance Charity and Severn Area Rescue Association.

Chris said: "We now look forward to achieving the same level of success in the next year so we can make further donations."

The shop is open 8am-5pm Monday to Friday, 9am-2pm on Saturdays and 9am-1pm on Sundays.
