A Waitrose shopper has criticised the Stroud store for throwing away the day's unsold sushi.

The supermarket has responded by saying it is working with its sushi supplier, Sushi Daily, to find ways to minimise waste.

Shopper Trudy first became concerned for the practice after a trip to the store on Thursday night.

She explained: "We asked the sushi chefs: what time do you reduce stuff?

"They replied: we don't. So we then asked: what do you with it then?

"And they said they throw it out.

"That's so wasteful - I know the sushi bar isn't technically run by Waitrose, but they're approving of that practice by having it in their shop in the first place.

Trudy also said she was told by a member of staff that the supermarket does not reduce prices because people would then just wait before buying.

"I decided not to buy any sushi then," she added.

"I get that they prepare it fresh, but surely some of it, like the vegetarian stuff, can be saved and given to the foodbank."

A spokesperson for Waitrose said: "Reducing food waste is a top priority for our business - we don’t want any food fit to be consumed to go to waste.

"Fresh sushi brings unique challenges when it comes to food safety and donations, as the products need to be eaten the same day.

"However, we're currently working on a number of trials with Sushi Daily to minimise wastage."
