I am absolutely staggered by the comment made by Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for Highways in response to the very disturbing article regarding the dangerous crossing of the A435 to enable the children of North Cerney school to safely reach the village church.

To say there is 'no current data' to suggest there is an 'issue' in this area is beyond complacency.

Does it take a fatality, or injury, to prompt action?

He completely misses the point that previously there was some intervention by the community police officer which may have prevented such an incident.

My grandchildren attend this school and I have experience of how dangerous and precarious the crossing of this road is.

The school nativity was the most recent and literally the staff and parents put their lives at risk to 'hold up' any traffic whilst the children cross.

The fact that the road at this juncture has a 'blind' bend makes it exceptionally dangerous, added to the fact that the traffic speeds along, well over the limit.

Has Mr Smith visited the site?

I am sure it would be most beneficial for him to do so and maybe help with the next 'crossing' to experience how dangerous it is.
