Worried residents have called for immediate action after a 'dangerous' hole has remained uncovered on a busy road for months.

The deep hole, which measures over 50cm in width, has been exposed after a manhole cover went missing on Siddington Road near cirencester.

As a short term fix a traffic cone appears to be have been wedged upside down in the mouth of the void on the busy main through fare.

One resident who spoke to the Standard said that a number of residents had contacted Gloucestershire County Council to ask for the area to be made safe after spotting cars clipping signs and the hole itself.

"It's absolutely disgusting," one of the residents said.

"It's really dangerous, when it snowed you couldn't actually see the cone or the mouth of the hole - we have told councillors but they just don't seem to care.

"Someone else reported it in October and they just stuck a traffic cone in the hole, all they need to do is replace the manhole cover, but they haven't bothered to do that - even though it's been over four months."

Thousands of cars use the busy road on a daily basis and another person who spoke our reporter said that they had seen a number of cars swerve to miss the makeshift signs, and that they had seen cars had hit them and knock them into the road on at least two occasions.

"It's an emergency - what if someone gets seriously hurt - why aren't they dealing with it?" Frustrated neighbours said.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire County Council said: “A highways crew will be attending to fix the drain cover today.”
