A 12th century abbey will one again transform into a temporary skate park.

Hundreds of young people will be flocking to Malmesbury Abbey, transformed into a skatepark by an army of volunteers for the 11th year running.

Preparations for the event will begin on Sunday, February 17, when members of the church family and community, begin laying down the wood floor, before bagging up 100 straw bales and getting everything ready except the skate ramps.

On Monday and Tuesday morning, there will be a baby and toddler Super Hero Party with inflatables, a ball pond and super hero crafts.

Tickets can be purchased from the Abbey Bookshop.

On Tuesday evening, Phil Williams and his team from Christians Surfers and Skaters UK will arrive to set up the ramps with the help of the church family.

The event opens on Wednesday morning and runs each day and evening until Friday with sessions from 10am to 9pm.

The festival will conclude with the Abbey Skate celebration service on Sunday, February 24, at 4pm, featuring one hour of fun songs, games, snacks, a short talk and a chance to see the first viewing of the Abbey Skate 2019 video.

Andrew Beebee, Children and Youth Minister at Malmesbury Abbey said: "We are really excited to be running our 11th Abbey Skate and seeing our beautiful 12th century abbey transformed into a skate park.

"The event was launched in 2009 as a way of engaging with young people and fulfilling the church's vision of joining 12th Century beauty with a 21st Century church.

"It is a way of showing young people that the abbey is for them as much as for anyone else."
