New electric car charging points could be installed in the Cotswolds by the Spring.

Cotswold District Council say that they are looking to install more charging points in the district by Spring this year and they hope to have them up and running in time for the summer.

A Cotswold District Council spokesperson said: "We are developing a legal framework that will enable us to procure and install Electronic Vehicle Charging Points over the coming years without having to repeat a lengthy bureaucratic process on each occasion.

"Once this legal framework is in place, we should be in a position to issue mini tenders for the installation of some new charging points by Spring 2019 with a view to seeing them becoming operational before the Summer."

Currently, the district council provide two fast electrical charging points, one at Beeches car park in Cirencester, and the other at Old Market Way Car Park in Moreton-in-Marsh.

Electric car users can use both of the car parks for a maximum of one hour for £4 to park and charge their cars.

So far, they have not confirmed any definitive locations for the new charging points.

The news comes after a Cirencester resident criticised the council for not fixing the Beeches car park charging point, after it was left broken for more than six weeks.

"There's no point encouraging people to buy electric vehicles if they can't charge them," said Lucy Brook.
