Tributes have been pouring in around Wiltshire following the death of a former firefighter.

Malmesbury Fire Station has announced the passing of one of its popular former firefighters Roy Evans on December 31.

Roy served at the fire station for 18 years and 10 months, before leaving the fire service on April 2, 2012.

A spokesperson for the fire station said: "It is with great sadness that today we lost a very good friend and one of the best firefighters you could have wished for on a crew.

"A very practical man with a wealth of experience.

"Anyone who knew Roy will know that he would help anyone and could turn his hand to pretty much anything.

"Malmesbury Fire Station sends it condolences to Roy's family and friends.

"Roy has certainly left a lot of great memories within the Fire Service and will be very missed."

Malmesbury mayor Fran Vandelli said: “We’re sorry to hear about his passing and offer our condolences to his family.

"We owe so much to the firefighters who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe, so we will remember him with gratitude for his years of service.”
