THE Prince of Wales Bridge is now open to traffic, and travel into Wales is free for the first time in what is thought to be over 800 years.

Charges on the M4 and M48 Severn bridges have been axed from today - saving commuters as much as £1,400 a year.

According to a BBC article the first written reference to the ferry is in a 12th Century document.

"Monday will be a very historic day," historian Anne Rainsbury told the BBC.

"It'll be the first time you can cross the Severn Estuary for free."

Highways England announced this morning that the M4 bridge is open.

However, work is continuing on the M48 bridge is now closed westbound, and drivers are advised to check their journey before they travel.
