MALMESBURY’S first ever plastic free festival took place on the weekend.

The Plastic Unwrapped Festival hosted by Malmesbury Against Plastic took place on Saturday, November 24.

In collaboration with Malmesbury Town Council, they hosted the festival in order to spread awareness of plastic-pollution and to engage and inform the community on the matter.

Free to enter, the one day festival attracted nearly 600 people to the Town Hall.

Malmesbury mayor Fran Vandelli opened the festival in the morning with an impassioned lecture, who was then followed throughout the day by a wide variety of guest lecturers.

Guest lecturers included a marine biologist and conservationist, Marks and Spencers senior packaging technologist, North Wiltshire MP James Gray and more.

There was also a variety of film screenings in the Malting Room and an art exhibition in the 'Planet Protector Zone'.

A photobooth installation, tombola, silent auction and a range of light bites completed the offerings.

“As our first event, which had been a long while in planning, we were anxious to make it a success," explained co-organiser and MAP member Francesca Fearnley. “But we were all so happy to see the Town Hall completely full and so many people coming and going throughout the day."
