On SATURDAY, November 17, residents of Yate and surrounding areas all arrived at the Shopping Centre for the annual Christmas light switch on with a very special guest.

A stage was set up right next to Santa’s Grotto in the centre of the shops, next to Boswell’s with thousands of people turning out to watch two parades and a number of acts before the main event.

Throughout the day there were tribute acts, including Bristol Blues Brothers and Michael Buble before a visit from Santa himself.

There were also two parades which included groups from around the area, including Yate Star Twirlers and Sodbury Players as well as Paddington Bear and Peter Rabbit.

Andrew Lowery, the Centre Manager, was full of pride that the area had come together to celebrate the special event.

“This years Christmas Parade & light switch on event proved to be an amazing success with an increase of over 17% more visitors compared to last year,” he said.

“There was a real sense of community with the Razzamatazz Theatre School, Yate Star Twirlers and the Rock Choir.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in the event and my team for their hard work, especially Jeny Hillson who organised a truly great day for customers and retailers.

“December will see a host of schools and groups singing Christmas songs bringing a festive atmosphere to Yate.”
