FIRE crews from Birchwood and Warrington have spent four hours tackling a lorry fire which has closed a road.

The A556 Chester Road in Tabley, near Knutsford, has been shut since 10.30am after a vehicle fire in a HGV.

The trailer of the vehicle was carrying approximately 19 pallets of non hazardous materials which weighed approximately 25,000kg.

Crews spent more than an hour tackling the flames and working to contain the water and prevent any waste running into nearby waterways.

Fire crews left at 2.30pm but a specialist clean-up company was needed to clear the area.

The team were detained at the scene for around four hours.

The road remains closed.
